I discovered Tormenter amongst the many band friends I have through MySpace. (yes, the site is still kicking for great music!) While they are a relatively new band, they embrace the old-school thrashing/kick-ass style that I love, and you know how much I enjoy finding them! Jahir was good enough to answer some questions for us and I hope you all will check them out! We can always use more bands with balls!
Enjoy....
D-Day: Thank you for speaking to D-Day's Revenge!
Jahir: thank you for having us
D-Day: Tell us about any possible shows coming up.
Jahir: well currently we’re looking at a show with Forbidden, Evile, Gamma Bomb, and Bonded By Blood next week and in mid January the Keep Metal Alive fest. We’re also in the process of booking other shows in between and after those
D-Day: How about music offerings? Any recorded music recently out or coming out?
Jahir: yes, actually. Our debut album Pulse of Terror came out in late October and apparently it’s doing pretty well. Our label EBM said that it’s currently the top selling album in the catalogue, so we’re pretty proud of it
D-Day: If you currently offer free downloads, at what point would you consider it the best time to stop offering free music? If many people suddenly ended up with free downloads of your album, would you see that as advertisement or stealing?
Jahir: as of right now we’re not offering any free downloads. All we’re offering is our stream through our myspace and facebook. In the near future we might put up about one or two tracks from POT for a limited time so the fans can have something to put in their MP3 players and yet another thing to anger up their blood
D-Day: Most all bands have something wacky happen to them at some point. What story can you share with us concerning equipment or wardrobe malfunctions, a Spinal Tap moment, promoter screwing you over, crazy fan moment, someone shit their pants onstage etc... you get the point.
Jahir: well we’ve had a few actually. Rodrigo’s guitar got stolen at one show, another instance our cars got towed after the Ensiferum show and our old bass player was filling in for Thomas on drums that night. His was the only one that was saved so we had to drive around in this eerie looking neighborhood at 2-3am to get our cars back. One time, Blitz got really drunk and we were doing a Testament cover (Over the Wall) and he called it Over The Border. Uh….I think there’s more but those are the only ones I can think of for now
D-Day: If you were granted the opportunity to choose any three bands to go on a world wide tour with, who would it be and why?
Jahir: any three bands? So many come to mind but ultimately my picks would be Megadeth, Iron Maiden, and Testament.
D-Day: You guys obviously have an old-school type thrashing sound. What are your general thoughts on the state of metal today? Are things looking up?
Jahir: it’s lacking balls and aggression. My opinion doesn’t define all of the metal bands now but a select few. I see a lot of mainstream metal bands sacrifice speed for heaviness. Some bands can pull it off and they sounds great, but others just sound redundant and if you’re not a huge fan of those bands you’d swear you were listening to the same band over and over again; at least to me. And then there are these really gay bands like Attack Attack! that are blending a whole bunch of stuff with “metal“. It’s so pathetic
D-Day: Let me ask a multiple choice question...
Tormenter has been chosen as the best band of 2010 and is on stage to receive your award from Lady Gaga. What do you do?
a) Be proffesional, get your award, say your "thank you's" and walk off.
b) Take the chance to ask Lady Gaga... "What the fuck are you wearing and why?"
c) Be the first to either burp or fart on stage at an awards ceremony.
d) None of the above
e) other
Jahir: I think Charlie would be the first to jump on her and mount her. Me on the other hand, not so much of a Gaga fan. I think, as a band, we’d accept the award and bash all the mainstream trends that are going on like autotune and the fact that those musicians aren’t musicians at all haha
D-Day: Tormenter has a very heavy sound! What do you listen to when you just want to relax? Don't be scared....
Jahir: oh I’m never afraid to answer this question. I’m open and honest about the music I listen to. When I’m relaxing you can catch me listening to The Beatles, doo-wop and 50’s music, old-skool west coast rap, stuff like that. I always end up somewhere in metal anyway
D-Day: While gathering information about your band, I noticed numerous bands that go by the name Tormentor. With the slight spelling difference, has anyone ever confused you with / or asked you about those bands? I know that the bands Halloween and Helloween have been through similar situations.
Jahir: all the time. During shows, in our contracts, you name it. It’s funny because our name is RIGHT THERE and some choose to ignore it haha. Also, some people that haven’t heard of US per-say, and when I tell them our band name they say “oh, the new tormenter or the old tormentor?“ and I say “uh…not the one with Mille Petrozza..so…the new one??” and then I just hand them our myspace info.
Oh and for the record, we’re not misspelling our name, -ER is another way to spell tormenter
D-Day: Where do you see Tormenter in 5 years?
Jahir: ideally: I see about another 4 records released, playing arena shows and world tours
Realistically: given the fact of how the economic state is and all that jazz, I still see those 4 records and playing world tours but like every local band right now struggling on the road trying to make ends-meet….but as long as you have beer it’s always a good time!
D-Day: Thanks again for speaking to D-Day's Revenge! Any final words for the fans?
Jahir: thank you again for having us and to all the fans: go pick up your copy of POT, put it in your victrola, turn it up to 11 and break shit. We’ll see you on the road soon. Thanks for the support since the beginning and we will enjoy kicking ass in your city
