Pcyst : A Wolfen Path
EP
I got this CD and settled in to hear it and give my overall impression. But after the first 2 songs I decided to stop it and try something new. It seems that the music somehow captured my imagination so I wanted to share that with you, the readers. I waited until I got a few beers into a Friday night and put the music back on. Here is my impressions as the album played...
1) The Sleeper Awakens
This is a "beautiful" (if I'm allowed to use that word) instrumental.
My first thoughts when this started was that of the opening theme to some epic movie. I hope it's not taken the wrong way by the band, but it's like something I envision when seeing a vast jungle while the sun is slowly rising over the horizon.... very mellow while almost painting a picture in ones mind.
2) Bloodthrone (revisited)
This one gets the vocals involved. The music is again very enchanting from the start and then the vocals start blending into the music. I won't lie or pretend... I have no fucking idea what he is saying, but it works. That black metal style vocals blended in with this soothing music is new to me, for one, and also rather delightful. There's even a stage where it gets a little "electronica" sounding at one point, but mellow and once again... it just fits. I love it.
3) Run!
Starts right off with keyboards.... but again, I wait for it...
The title of this song (much like the first) is well represented by the music. It may be the fact that I've already been through several beers, but I can see pictures in my mind by simply listening to the instrumentals. There's plenty of synthesizer and almost orchestral sounding music, but it tells the tale. I've barely started into this album but am really impressed.
4) Feed With Me
The vocals are back and rather eerie... After watching several episodes of Ghost Hunters recently, this is perfect. Picture early King Diamond with a more growling voice. Creepy and delicious. I can understand the words "Feed With Me".. so I may be getting better. Freakin' awesome.
5) Eternal Winter (Remix)
This one is a little more powerful. Shit is happening now and it makes me take notice. I'm fighting the urge to wait for crunching guitar.... but that almost soothing sound that stays with the song keeps drawing me back. More electronica drumming now starts midway, but still cool. It's like an intermission from the deepness before it takes you back under. Freaky, but I like it.
6) The Wolfen Path
The start of this one caught me off guard. It was loud and growling.... right after I was almost in my trance. I feel like vampires are fucking with my mind or something. I'm about to fade and they call me back. This shit is creepy, but cool....
7) A Weave Of Melancholy
The name says it all, judging by the start. If you were coming back to life after the last song, you will now be taken back down. I don't mean that in a bad way, but again... this music is great for capturing your mind. Pink Floyd don't have shit on this. This song is like a long carnival ride. Just as you start to think one way, the voices come in and throw you another way. Several tempo changes going throughout.
8) 1000 Demons (original edit)
Damned if this doesn't start off like a call to demons. (at least in my crazy mind) Actually,it sounds more like it's underwater... but a call nonetheless. I'm sure it's not what the intent was... but if they ever wanted an aquatic theme, this would be it. It's just something about the sound of it. Not in a technical way or production problems... but I hear it as under water for some reason. This is fucking with my mind...
9) Life And Death (Remix)
An immediate wake-up again. It's like they know when to turn it up. I'm wishing I knew what the Hell he was saying, but again.... oh well. It sounds OK ad that's what matters. If you took a dark metal song and through in a dance mix, this would be it. That very thought makes me ill, but it's been going good so far so I'll accept it. I just like the more orchestral sounds much more.
10) Death (Pcyst Remix)
I like the begining already. It just sounds like some shit is going down. Love the growls going over the music as usual. It's much more powerful than any of the others even though it's still being done over light music. But again... it works. I'm very impressed. I need this one cranking on Halloween to keep the fucking kids away.
11) The Wolfen Path (Remix)
This one starts off like a dance club.... I'll wait a bit... but you know what? It's like a wake up call after being in a trance for so long. I can't hate it.
What I will say after all of this is to be sure to check out Pcyst!
