Naraka
Naraka
This is an amazing release by a one man band that (in my opinion) crosses several genres of metal all in one setting. I realize that Naraka is labeled as a black metal band (at least I think I've seen that), but to me it stretches further.
I obviously have listened to this disc once before, but was impressed enough to do one of my "beer drinking and CD listening" reviews and do this in real time.
What you will read is my thoughts as I listen to this album song by song. As in the times in the past that I've done this, you will get my honest opinions as I go along and regardless of what I type or how drunk I may get... it will stay. I've struggled with the thoughts of changing some reviews in the past when I've done this, but I realized that this is how a normal person would feel listening to music so I don't need fancy words or to be proffesional sounding. This is my own freakin' site after all. So anyway... I'm 5 or 6 beers into it (or 8) so let's go and enjoy...
Cool album pic by the way...
Left Behind: Starts off with the creepy "check out the old gothic church in the background" type intro... We got the growling vocals and excellent music. It wouldn't be one to play at a wedding reception, obviously, but I love it. This is for the select group of metalheads that love that black metal sound. Very cool!
Suffer The Serpent: This one kicks into some thrash sound after the initial intro. The vocals start and is more like the thrash style as well. Wow, it is actually similar to a Corrosion of Conformity type groove from their early days. I'm digging it! Radio friendly... if it is a cool radio station. (no offense by that at all) Every station trying to get a new band will be going after them if they hear this. He'd better give me first dibs...
Aadu Paamba: He told me this meant "Dance, Oh Serpent" in his native Tamil language. There's a Trivial Pursuit question for ya. Actually has a tribal type vibe to the backing vocals. Not to say Tamil is a tribe... just saying.
Sounds a bit like an old-school Metallica as a whole. Vocals especially. Need to pee, but also want to see how this turns out.
Journey: Actually has a power metal style intro. Well hell! The vocals are power metal too! Wow! OK, there's the growls... but shit, that was impressive! The power metal sounding vocals return and then the black style vocals return as a backing element. And yes, I feel a difference between black and death style growling even though they cross lines depending on the band.
Gaia: Bit of a theatric intro. Cool. Now the crunch!! Fuck yeah!! This one makes me want to slap someone for no reason. That's cool... and now the growling comes in... I'm a good Baptist, seriously.... haha
I picture kids having candles lit and being all crazy with this one. While I seem sarcastic, I do like it!
Feed The Fire: Right off the bat, I feel like I'm in the 80's enjoying thrash. Let's see what happens. Very cool! Not "old-school" at all but very cool. I love the backing vocals going along with it, This is already one of my favorites! Bad ass!
The Majesty (outro): This is an instrumetal, obviously. In fact.... it's like a "cool down lap" for runners (or headbangers) to catch their breath after a hard fought battle. Very interesting!
OK! I've drank a few and listened to this disc. Well... I love it! It's basically like a mix tape I would normally have from several bands, but all in one. Be sure to check out Naraka!
